Sober.N virus spreading fast
The Nth variant (literally) of the Sober mass mailer has been released today. BitDefender analysts warn that the virus is spreading fast, through the use of an infected attachment. The e-mail sent by the virus is written in either German or English, which suggests that the author may be German in origin, and comes with one of two subject lines "FwD: Ich bin's nochmal" [literally "It's me again"] or "I've_got your EMail on my_account!."
"This comes as a sobering reminder that the antivirus world is not all about zero-day vulnerabilities and self- propelling worms. While security companies around the world have been announcing that the 'bots' are the flavor of the month, here we have a simple mass-mailer which is having enormous success, without using anything more complicated than simple soc-eng [social engineering] and basic programming skills," declared Bogdan Dumitru, BitDefender CTO.
BitDefender software was updated this morning to detect this new threat. Users are advised to keep their antivirus up-to-date and their virus shield enabled.
